The New Face of Business Development: Why Technology and Traditional BD Work Better Together
Business development has changed a lot over the years.
There was a time when building relationships with potential clients meant picking up the phone, sending a letter or, quite simply, walking through the door and introducing yourself.
Those approaches still have their place. In fact, we’d argue that they are more valuable than ever.
But alongside traditional business development, technology has opened up a whole new range of ways for businesses to identify opportunities, build relationships and stay connected with potential clients. For recruitment agencies in particular, combining the two can be incredibly effective.
Technology makes it easier to find the right opportunities
Today, recruiters can use platforms such as LinkedIn, CRM systems, email marketing and data tools to identify businesses that are growing, hiring or potentially facing recruitment challenges. Instead of approaching every business in the same way, technology allows us to be more targeted.
We can see when a company is expanding, when new roles are being advertised or where restructuring business could create a need for recruitment support. That information can help start a conversation. But finding the opportunity is only part of the process.
Sometimes, you can’t beat a face-to-face conversation
There is something different about meeting someone in person. Walking into a local business, introducing yourself and having a genuine conversation can create a connection that an email simply cannot.
It doesn’t have to be a formal sales meeting either. A drop-in visit to a client or potential client can be an opportunity to put a face to a name, understand more about their business and find out what is happening on the ground. For a local recruitment agency, this is particularly important. Sometimes the most useful conversation happens away from a screen.
We work with businesses across Surrey and value being able to build relationships within the local business community.
The best approach is a combination of both
It shouldn’t be a choice between traditional business development and new technology. The two work well together. Technology can help us identify who to speak to, understand what is happening within a business and make that initial connection. Traditional BD can then turn that connection into a relationship.
For example, a recruiter might notice through LinkedIn that a local business is expanding and advertising several new positions. That could lead to an introduction by email or LinkedIn, followed by a phone call or a visit to the business.
The technology has helped identify the opportunity, but the relationship is still built by people.
Recruitment is still a people business
Technology will continue to change the way recruitment agencies operate. AI, automation, data and digital platforms are already making many processes faster and more efficient. But when it comes to winning clients and understanding what a business actually needs, the human element remains incredibly important.
A company doesn’t just need someone to send CVs. They need a recruitment partner who understands their business, their culture and the challenges they are facing. That understanding comes from conversations, relationships and taking the time to get to know people.
The future of business development isn’t necessarily about choosing between the old and the new. It’s about using technology to work smarter while keeping the personal approach that has always made good business development effective.
Sometimes that means a LinkedIn message.
Sometimes it’s a phone call.
And sometimes, it’s simply walking through the door and saying hello.
